My First Love

“And perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not” (2: 216, Holy Quran)

“There’s no love like the first.”

They say love is blind and they couldn’t be more correct when it comes to being in love for the very first time with a political party. These are election days and many people seem madly in love with their beloved political party. They are showing all the signs & symptoms of a person in love! I am not talking of any single group of people nor of any single party; I always try to generalize things. I have been observing these signs over the last few months.
Here are some tell-tale signs of people being in love with their political parties irrespective of age, sex & other barriers!

1. Infatuation with their ‘loved one’
These love birds are seen to be praising and often exaggerating in praise about their beloved party just like a couple in love heave huge praise upon one another! They are seen talking all the time about their new found love, with their friends, on phones, social media etc. They are willing to tell lies and false rumors in praise of their parties. Some may even quote verses/quotations from the Holy Scriptures or from famous personalities to prove that their love is right!

2. Unable to hear any criticism:
“Your first love is when you get all of your insanity out. You behave like an insane monster because your mind is freaking out about all these new powerful feelings”.

The moment one starts POSITIVELY criticizing these people’s leaders or their BELOVED party, one has done the unforgiveable. One is immediately attacked un-relentlessly by a pack of hounds so much so that one feels that one has attacked their loved one and so be it! There is no escape and one is made to regret that one even started the conversation!

Warning: They may even start trolling, abusing, swearing all sort of obscenities at you AND they may even physically attack you if you are within their reach! It is said they don’t even spare their seniors, teachers, relatives or parents in this regard. This is extremely unfortunate & sad especially for those party lovers that are hoping to bring about an ISLAMIC revolution.

3. Unheeding of Advice
When one tries to give advice to these lovebirds and warn them of the consequences ahead, they seem to have their eyes closed, ears wrapped up and only their lips are open in full majestic praise of their loved party. Never say “Chill guys, its just the start, see what is ahead!”. They are in TRUE LOVE! They all seem to be wanting in vane in committing collective suicide!

4. Never Give them suggestions of a ‘Better Alternate’
Never ever give the person in love the suggestion of a better ‘alternate’, for they have already made up their minds to live in peaceful bliss with their beloved leaders & their beloved parties. They are as committed to their loved ones as committed uni-potent stem cells! They have made their pledges to die for one another. Nobody is going to stop them now!

5. Never praise another ‘lovely’ party in front of them
Never make the mistake of praising another party in front of them for they won’t tolerate it. It’s just like praising another girl in front of a man who is deeply in love with another woman! They, instead will start finding faults in the party that you are praising in front of them!

6. Never enter into Discussion/Debate with them
They are going to beat you hands down when it comes to discussing their ‘loved one’. And they are going to do it in unison, so much united they are as a group. Even if they know they are wrong they won’t admit it and will even side with their colleagues even when knowing they are wrong too. It becomes a pathetic situation from where no escape is possible!

Alas! As in the case of couples in love, it is better to leave them as one wise man has said; “When a couple is in love, the best solution is marriage”.

So all we can do is wish these people a happy marriage that will be ever-lasting! Although we will always fear these common sayings:
‘Love marriages seldom last’ or ‘Celebrity marriages never last’

I end with a rhetorical question to these lovebirds: This maybe your first political love, but have you ensured that the candidate you will be voting for on election day, whether his/her party is also his/her ‘first love’? For I see many candidates in many constituencies who are in their 4-5th love affairs!

“I am glad it cannot happen twice, the fever of first love. For it is a fever, and a burden, too, whatever the poets may say.”

“Something about first love defies duplication. Before it, your heart is blank. Unwritten. After, the walls are left inscribed and graffitied. When it ends, no amount of scrubbing will purge the scrawled oaths and sketched images, but sooner or later, you find that there’s space for someone else, between the words and in the margins.”
